Embrace The Magic Of A Summer Christmas

Sharing is caring!

Creative ways to bring festive cheer that align with the warm, sunny season.

Hey, South Africans, do you ever watch a Christmas movie and long for the layers of Yuletide cosiness? The roaring fire and snow clinging to window panes? The fresh garlands of spruce/fir and deep red velvet? How do you feel about the Winter aesthetic that dominates Christmas decor? With our climate, I find the winter motifs quite weird. What does your Summer Christmas look like?

Needing the aircon on to battle the heat and then putting snow spray on the windows? It feels so fake to me. Spending half the day in a pool or at the beach clashes with going inside to snowmen and stockings hung on a mantel.

There’s no roaring fireplaces or walking in a Winter wonderland for a Southern Hemisphere Christmas. We escape the ‘ugly sweater’ trend. Instead of covering our homes with motifs of Winter cosiness, why not embrace a Summer Christmas?

When sunshine replaces snow, maybe we can take the opportunity to decorate with more creative options. Let’s throw some themes together.

Summer Christmas Themed Inspiration

Christmas At The Coast

Imagine the soft rustle of waves and the warmth of the sun-kissed sand woven into your holiday setting.

Seaside holidays are a South African tradition for the Festive Season, because it coincides with the Summer school holidays. So, why not lean in to the beachy holiday vibe and decorate with a nautical vibe. Especially if you actually live at the coast or have a holiday home you’ll be at for Christmas.

  • Motifs: Incorporate sea-life elements like starfish, seahorses, coral and shells.
  • Tree: Use a driftwood Christmas tree for an extra ‘seaside holiday’ aesthetic or hang nautical inspired ornaments on your basic faux green tree.
  • Plants: If you’re in the Cape, combine fynbos and eucalyptus for a  spectacular textured wreath.
  • Textures: sisal, jute, linen, pearl and sea-glass.
  • Colour palette: sandy beige, taupe, and white with small touches of turquoise and teal.
  • Metal: Silver
  • Lights: keep it simple with LED twinkle lights

Capture the essence of a seaside holiday in your festive décor with the breezy charm of the ocean. This theme invites you to merge natural elements with holiday cheer. It will create a relaxed yet elegant atmosphere. The seaside aesthetic brings a sense of tranquility and festive joy. The subtle twinkle of silver and the glow of soft LED lights add just the right amount of sparkle to your coastal celebration.

Tropical Paradise Christmas

Island holidays and Summer fun go hand-in-hand globally. What does Christmas look like in the Caribbean or Hawai’i? Tropical island nations lean in to fresh florals and fruity fun.  with island influences.

  • Decorate with tropical flowers, fruit, and palm leaves.
  • Motifs: pineapples, watermelon, poinsettia and hibiscus flowers,
  • Include seasonal fruits like watermelon, pineapple, cherries, mangoes, and strawberries as both décor and snacks.
  • Decorate a few fresh pineapples with baubles and battery-operated lights to add to your table on Christmas Day – a fragrant and fun option.
  • Tree: go maximalist and stuff your full of bright colours, florals, and tropical leaves.
  • Plants: Let your houseplants shine and use the excuse to get more plant babies, like a Christmas Cactus or some Poinsettia.
  • Textures: Opt for lightweight tablecloths and fresh floral centerpieces.

A Tropical Christmas is all about celebrating the beauty and abundance of nature. Keep the atmosphere light, joyful, and filled with summery charm. You can bring in bold patterns and lively colours with throw pillows or dinner napkins. Fun island colours will enhance the festive, tropical vibe. Whether you’re lounging poolside with tiki torches or enjoying an airconditioned indoor celebration filled with fresh blooms, this theme radiates happiness. It’s a refreshing twist on traditional holiday décor.

Countryside Summer Christmas

Capture the charm of countryside living when rustic elegance meets festive cheer. This theme is all about creating an inviting atmosphere that feels fresh and summery yet unmistakably Christmassy. Blend traditional Christmas red, green, and gold with touches of matt black. Use summer-friendly textures like linen and jute. Think gingham throws and wicker baskets. Decorate with glass jars filled with nuts, cranberries, or a white candle. Set your table with white and gold tableware. Use wooden crates to contain wrapped gifts and galvanized metal buckets instead of stockings. Keep gift wrapping simple and minimalist with brown paper and red ribbons/string. Scatter brass or gold stars and jingle bells throughout your décor scheme. And lanterns of all kinds add a special touch, even if they’re not lit up.

General Summer Christmas Decor

Not in the mood for theme decorating but still want your Christmas decor to reflect Summer? Decorating for Christmas without a set theme allows for a truly personal and eclectic celebration. Mix and match cherished ornaments and handmade crafts to create a unique display. Let your favourite pieces shine against a backdrop of neutral tones or go for the traditional reds and greens. Play with textures—glittering baubles, soft ribbons, and rustic wood—to add depth and charm. Without the constraints of a theme, your décor becomes a canvas for creativity and memories.

For a Summer Christmas, embrace the season’s warmth and vibrancy with elements that reflect the sunny, festive atmosphere. Swap heavy winter woolens for lighter materials like linen and cotton. Add touches of fresh greenery or bright poinsettia plants for a Christmassy vibe. Bright, cheerful colours can complement traditional Christmas tones, creating a playful and refreshing palette. Fairy lights are perfect for creating a magical evening glow, making your Summer Christmas celebration feel effortlessly festive and full of life.

  • You can’t go wrong with stars for Christmas décor, no matter where in the world you are.
  • Add a lot of candles to your living spaces – bonus if they have scents like pine or cinnamon to invoke the Christmas feels.
  • Bells are a timeless Christmas décor element, symbolizing joy and celebration, while adding charm, elegance, and nostalgia to any holiday setting.
  • String solar-powered fairy lights in trees or around your patio.
  • Use eucalyptus or local greenery to create lightweight wreaths or for tablescapes.
  • Go bold and bright with pops of saturated colour.
  • Find an old dry branch and put it up on a wall with lights and some paper stars for an easy DIY vignette.
  • Make cinnamon scented salt dough gingerbread men to hang on your tree.
